Our Curriculum

Pinehill Academy follows the International Montessori Curriculum while also aligning itself with the International Cambridge Curriculum, both of which inspire a more creative approach to learning and encourage learning beyond classrooms and textbooks, allowing students to grow personally, creatively and academically.

Mathematics

Mathematics is taught using specialised Montessori equipment that makes abstract concepts concrete and understandable. This hands-on approach allows learners to build strong foundations and develop true conceptual understanding. Challenging concepts are introduced earlier in a developmentally appropriate way, empowering learners with confidence and problem-solving skills. The focus is on mastery rather than memorisation, allowing each child to progress at their own pace while achieving depth of understanding.

English

Our English programme nurtures a love for language while building strong foundations in reading, writing, and comprehension. Learners are encouraged to express themselves creatively through storytelling, discussion, and written work, while being gently introduced to grammar and the mechanics of writing. We follow a structured reading programme from Grade 1 to Grade 7, providing weekly opportunities for reading practice that develop fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking. Through carefully chosen texts, learners are exposed to a wider world, building vocabulary, empathy, and understanding beyond the classroom.

Afrikaans

Afrikaans is introduced in an age-appropriate and engaging way, focusing on exposure and confidence rather than rote learning. Using the Montessori method and our own carefully designed workbooks, learners begin with early reading skills, vocabulary development, spelling, and sentence construction. Lessons are hands-on and interactive, allowing children to absorb the language naturally and progressively, while developing a solid foundation in understanding and usage.

Reading

One of Pinehill Academy’s main focuses is encouraging a passion for literature in each learner. Every day, there is an allocated time set aside for both individual reading and listening to a book together as a class. The school provides a range of suitable novels for children to immerse themselves in. Each week, learners are provided with readers that are allocated according to age and reading levels. Our wide range of readers include both fiction and non-fiction, and allows learners to develop vocabulary, imagination, and also learn about the world around them.

Science

Science lessons are exciting, curiosity-driven, and deeply engaging. Rather than being textbook-focused, learning begins with the child’s interests and questions, allowing for meaningful exploration of topics. Learners investigate concepts through hands-on experiences, discussion, research, and observation. Our science curriculum includes astronomy, physical and cultural geography, history, zoology, botany, health sciences, and the study of matter. This integrated approach helps learners see connections across disciplines and develop a genuine love for discovery.

Physical Education

Physical Education supports the holistic development of the child by promoting movement, coordination, and healthy habits. Activities are designed to build strength, balance, flexibility, and teamwork in a fun and supportive environment. Through structured play, games, and physical challenges, learners develop body awareness, confidence, and a positive relationship with physical activity.

Art

Art is a space for creativity, self-expression, and exploration. Learners are exposed to drawing, painting, and a variety of colouring techniques while working with different materials and textures. The emphasis is on the creative process rather than the final product, encouraging confidence, imagination, and fine motor development.

Islamic Life Skills

Life Skills through an Islamic lens is designed to nurture the character of the learner by blending essential life skills with Islamic teachings. Rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah, the programme guides learners in developing strong moral character, emotional awareness, self-discipline, and a sense of responsibility toward themselves, others, and their environment. Through practical, age-appropriate learning, learners are taught Islamic manners, gratitude, respectful communication, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making, enabling them to confidently apply Islamic values in their everyday lives at home, at school, and within the wider community.
